Through the pitfalls and nervousness of the early days, I strove to accept my career as it unfolded. The first job that made a lasting impression on me was in a salon that actually did hair analysis. The testing of grams force and percentage of elongation intrigued my scientific nature. Knowing about the structure of hair became just as important to me as the knowledge of creating new images on actual human beings, and the power that it held. Moving from my hometown to Nashville was a major stepping stone in my professional evolution. Through the patience of my first best friend and mentor in Nashville, Danny Miller, I was taught a new "English" style of barbering that made a quantum leap in my hair cutting ability. After six years of working in Nashville, I decided to move to New York City and spent four years on Madison Avenue immersed in a whole new level of learning and exposure to new ideas. The time spent there created a foundation for me to become a teacher in my own right. I returned to Nashville and became a national educator for a major manufacturer of hair products for five years. Along with accommodating my clientele during the work week, I traveled to cities all across America for twenty-five weekends a year, sharing my knowledge with hairdressers at seminars. I loved the aspect of trying to make a difference in the abilities of my peers and helping them to grow professionally. It was important to me to make the learning process fun as well, and often switched to my comedic side that surfaces, on occasion, even to this day. In 1989, with the help of Tina Greer, I opened Salon Bella. With a dynamic staff, we created an environment of beauty, professionalism, and enjoyment for our clientele, which made it one of the premiere salons in the area. We achieved local and national recognition for the benchmarks we set over the course of its existence. At this point in my career, I am able to focus on my craft and offer my undivided attention to every client. As an independent contractor and without the stress of salon ownership, I am afforded the opportunity of creating the perfect one-on-one relationship with my clientele.
